Communications

eRezLife

eRezLife, or eRez, is a leading housing and residence life software that we utilize at the University of King’s College residence. Through this program, our residents will be able to; apply for residence, submit facilities requests, request ethernet access, request extensions during residence closures, change your meal plan, do your roommate success plan, and so much more! eRez is a simple to use system that allows housing and residence life administrators to communicate with residents both en-masse, and individually.

King’s and Dalhousie students can access the program by using this link.

Non-King’s students will need to connect with residence@ukings.ca to get their accounts set up. Once the account has been activated by our team, non-King’s students will use this link to access eRez.

Internet access

King’s Residence has a dedicated high-speed Wi-Fi network available throughout the residence buildings. Residents connect through the Residence-Secure network using a Dalhousie NetID and a unique Wi-Fi password generated through the King’s Residence Wi-Fi portal.

NetID access

All residents need a NetID to connect to residence Wi-Fi.

For King’s and Dalhousie students, your NetID is the username associated with your Dalhousie email and university services. For example, if your email address is zz123123@dal.ca, your NetID is zz123123.

If you are studying at another institution and living at King’s, you will still receive a NetID so you can access campus Wi-Fi. To set up your NetID:

  1. Visit password.dal.ca
  2. Enter your King’s/Dalhousie student number (B0#), date of birth, and a backup email address
  3. Follow the prompts to create your NetID and password
  4. Save your NetID somewhere safe – you will need it to connect your devices to Wi-Fi

Important for non-King’s and non-Dalhousie students: Do not use your NetID as an email address to log in to eRezLife. Continue using the original login method you used when applying for residence. Using your NetID to access eRezLife can create a duplicate account and cause problems accessing your residence information.

Connecting to residence Wi-Fi

To connect your device:

  1. Visit ukings.campuswifi.net, or open your device’s Wi-Fi settings and select the Residence-Guest network.
  2. Select Manage WPA2 Portal.
  3. Select Generate Password to create your unique password for the Residence-Secure Wi-Fi network.
  4. Save your password, return to your device’s Wi-Fi settings, and connect to Residence-Secure using the password you generated.

You may also scan the QR code provided in the Wi-Fi portal after generating your password to connect a compatible device.

Your Residence-Secure password is tied to your unique NetID and should not be shared with anyone else. If another resident is experiencing connection issues, please direct them to the support options below rather than sharing your password.

Guest access and additional devices

Through the residence Wi-Fi portal, residents can:

  • Create up to three guest accounts for visitors who need Wi-Fi access. Guest accounts remain active for up to one month, or until you delete them.
  • Connect compatible devices such as laptops, televisions, streaming devices, game consoles and mobile devices.
  • Generate a new Residence-Secure password if required. If you generate a new password, all connected devices will need to reconnect using the new password.

Ethernet connections

For most residents, a wired Ethernet connection is not necessary. The residence Wi-Fi network is designed to support everyday and high-bandwidth uses such as HD streaming, online gaming, video calls, schoolwork, and connecting personal devices.

Some residence rooms may still have old Ethernet ports in the walls. These legacy ports are no longer active and should not be used.

If you have a specific need for a wired Ethernet connection, contact Eastlink directly. Eastlink may be able to arrange for Ethernet service to be installed in your residence unit where appropriate.

Day-to-day life

Non-King's Students in Residence

Non-King’s students living in residence are an important part of our community and are welcome and encouraged to participate in all residence events and activities. Typically, non-King’s students make up 5 to 10 percent of our residence population and contribute meaningfully to the shared experience.

To get set up for residence life:

  • DalCard: If you’re new to residence, please email a copy of your photo ID to residence@ukings.ca to request your DalCard. If you’re a returning non-King’s resident, your existing DalCard will still work.

  • Wi-Fi Access: You’ll need your B0# and NetID to connect to the Dalhousie Wi-Fi network. You can obtain this information by visiting the Alex Hall front desk or contacting Dalhousie IT Support at the Killam Library.

Please note that student support services at King’s (e.g., academic, mental health, advising) are available only to King’s students. For support services, connect with your Don or your home institution.

For all other questions, please contact residence@ukings.ca.

Laundry

Laundry machines are located in the basement of Alex Hall, Middle Bay and Cochran Bay. To use them, you need a laundry card which will be included in your residence package when you arrive. You can load money onto the laundry card using your debit or credit card at the Coinamatic re-load station in the basement of the A&A Building. Each load of washing costs $1.75 and a load of drying costs $1.50. Please consider using unscented laundry products.

Laundry cards are required to be returned at the end of the academic year. If a laundry card is not returned, a $25 fee will be applied to your student account. Replacements for lost cards may be purchased at the re-load station located in the basement of King’s A&A. For card issues, please contact Coinamatic at https://coinamatic.com/service-request/.

Illness and wellness trays

If you become ill or experience any health-related difficulties during the academic year, feel free to talk with your don. We will do our best to support and accommodate your needs. The dons can arrange for wellness trays to be brought to you from the dining hall.

Maintenance

The Facilities staff at King’s are responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of our residence buildings. Any maintenance requests should be reported online using form F011 through the residence portal. Larger maintenance issues should be directed to your don.

Cleaning

Students are responsible for the general upkeep of their rooms. Common areas of the university are cleaned by our cleaning contractor who use “green” cleaning supplies and products. Any cleaning requests can be submitted to the front desk of Alexandra Hall. Ongoing complaints or concerns should be directed to your don.

Recycling and garbage

Bins are provided for garbage and for recycling (plastic and glass drinking containers and paper) in Alexandra Hall, Cochran Bay, Angels’ Roost, and under Middle, Chapel, and Radical bays. Please regularly empty the garbage can in your room into one of main garbage bins in one of those locations.

Common rooms and TV rooms

Common rooms with televisions, which are for the general use of all students, are located in Alexandra Hall and in the Middle Bay Common Room. These rooms can be booked for group use through the Residence and Conference Services Coordinator.

Amenities and services

Fitness Facilities

All residence students have full access to the fitness facilities (aerobic studio, cardio room, weight room, gymnasium) located in our campus gym. You have access to these facilities by using your residence swipe card. King’s students can also access the Dalplex.

DalCard / Student ID cards

The DalCard is your student identification card, Library card, and it provides you with access to Prince Hall (the dining hall). You will also need to show it when you use your university bus pass on Metro Transit. You can get your DalCard at any time during the year by going to the DalCard office, which is located in Howe Hall at 6230 Coburg Rd. (on the Dalhousie campus), a five-minute walk from the King’s quad.

To get your DalCard as a new incoming student, please follow the steps outlined here.

If you are a new incoming non-King’s student, please connect with residence@ukings.ca to submit your DalCard photo.

If you are a returning resident, King’s or otherwise, and already have a DalCard, you do not need to get a new one! You only need to update your DalCard if you have changed your level of study.

Storage

Unfortunately, King’s is not able to provide any storage space for personal belongings.

Bicycles

There are numerous bike racks located throughout the campus for bike storage. Bicycles which are secured to railings, trees or buildings will be removed and placed in storage for one week, after which they will be donated to charity.

Campus Safety

The university has taken a number of measures to ensure the safety of the campus community at King’s:

  • Controlled-access doors have been installed on all residence buildings, and professional security make hourly rounds of the campus after regular business hours.
  • Each night our dedicated Residence Services Assistants and one of the dons are on-call to respond to emergencies, and the dean is only a phone call away.
  • In the event of a serious emergency, we rely on our good relationship with the Halifax Regional Police and Emergency Medical Services, who are always quick to respond.

In the event of an emergency…

Dial 9-911 from any campus phone to speak with emergency personnel (ambulance, police, etc). You should also call extension 132 to alert the front desk. If you cannot contact the front desk yourself, send a friend or bystander.

Safety bulletins

The Residence Team issues safety memos throughout the year in the event that there are particular safety issues you should know about. Read these notices, please! You will find them in your Dalhousie email account and posted on your don’s bulletin board in your residence.
